The Fashion Lab is a multifunctional studio space that hosts a number of events and creative workshops which shine a light on sustainability in the fashion, contemporary needlework, and textiles-based industries.
Situated in Ampersand Inventions on the fourth floor of Commercial Union House, it is part of a diverse cultural community that includes artists, designers, writers, small businesses, charities, galleries and more.
The Fashion Lab was founded in 2016, directed by Melanie Kyles and supported by Orbis which runs Commercial Union House, transforming an old lecture room into a vibrant and fresh creative space that is set up for events, workshops, tuition and collaborations. The spacious room has great city views of Grey’s Monument, is naturally well-lit, has a fresh, colourful aesthetic that balances clean graphics with rich textures, such as the six-foot pink marbled sewing bench and giant cork wall, and also functions as Melanie’s working studio.
All materials used in The Fashion Lab workshops are responsibly chosen for their high-quality and low environmental impact, and the events themselves allow like-minded people to connect and develop new or existing skills, build confidence, and practice mindfulness. Events and tuition range from professional techniques and creative development to more relaxed meetups that make the most of the mindful and social benefits of sewing and contemporary hand embroidery.
